Sugar’s over on Saturday.

Towards the end of the 2ndGrade match on Saturday,  Bective needed six runs to win with heaps of overs and wickets in hand.  Dean Hoy had just come to the crease and had scored 16 runs off 4 deliveries from the over before.
It was time to turn to our Sugar!!!!!
The ball was thrown to Sugar to have a bowl by his captain, with the cheeky words from Mark  “don’t you lose us this match, Sugar.”
The first ball of Sugar’s over.
With Dean Hoy on strike Sugar balled his first delivery. Hoy was surprised by the delivery and pushed it to the leg side for what he thought would be an easy single.  NOT when Sugar is bowling, he took off after the ball, Hoy then started to run. Sugar found that Hoy was now between him and the ball, so what does our Sugar do.
A/ Pull up and let Hoy pass and let him make his ground.
B/ Side step Hoy to collect to ball.
Or C/ Shoulder charge Dean Hoy who plays front row in Group 4 Rugby League.
You guessed it Sugar shoulder charged Dean Hoy and although Sugar ended up on his backside. Sugar did let him know, that Sugar meant business.
The 2nd ball of Sugar’s over.
You see it was a long hot day in the field. You had our President at 1st Slip and Rodney Pryor at point, both of which are not your fastest movers at the best of time let alone after a few hours in the field.
Sugar bowled and the batsmen guided the ball between our two tired old fieldsmen. Both our President and Rodney looked at each other to see who would be the first to move and chase the ball down, when suddenly Sugar like a flash, like a strike of lightning took off from his follow through and bisected both Rodney and our President who were still having a stare off. Sugar fielded the ball at the 3rd man boundary off his own bowling.
The 3rd Ball of Sugars Over.
Sugar run-up was getting longer with each delivery. As he approach the crease Mark Fisher at Keeper, our President at 1st Slip and Rod Pryor at Point were chatting SUGAR, SUGAR, SUGAR. The delivery was a bit too short and it ended up in the piles of gravel on the Sully Park hill. The match was over.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Sugar’s three ball over will never be forgotten.CITY

Leading from the front.

We are all astounded by the personal sacrifices that City’s newest Life Member, Peter Mead has made for our club. This season has been no exception, Peter was looking forward to a season in 2nd Grade but after we lost Harrison Kelly as our 1st Grade Captain at the start of the season the club turned once more to Peter as our saviour. Once again Peter didn’t let us down, not only has he taken leadership of our 1st Grade side but he has turned them into a very competitive team that play for each other and have a wonderful spirit of mateship and a common goal.

In 2nd Grade the same can be said of Mark Fisher. Mark has stepped into the breach as captain and has kept an understrength team together through difficult times. He has shown faith in his players and always encouraged them.
Our 2nd Grade didn’t have a wicket keeper for Saturday’s match and after ringing around could not find any keeping gear. So Mark went off and brought the entire keeping gear we required himself. He practiced Keeping during lunch and morning tea breaks in the offices at Council and had some office staff throw him catches, using his chair as the stumps.
Match day came, Mark had Josh throw him some catches, it didn’t look good. Mark said with a smile “I am confident of stopping at least half of them”.
We took to the field and like in every match that he has captain, Mark set a high standard for his fellow players to follow. The bowling as a bit over the shop and on occasions the ball would bounce just in front of him, sometimes twice. But NOT one catch was dropped and NOT one bye was given. Mark wore them on his chest, his legs, his arms, as he got behind every ball that came his way.
A Wicket Keeper he is not but a leader of men he is.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOO where some amazing people play CITY

A Dentist visit while on Holidays.

Our President and his wife interrupted their holidays to go to the dentist.
Our President's wife was so angry with this interruption to their week away. She stormed into the Dentist reception room and said "I want a tooth pulled, and I don't want any pain killers because I'm in a big hurry," she said. "Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we'll be on our way."
The dentist was quite impressed. "You're certainly a courageous woman," he said. "Which tooth is it?"
Our President's wife turned to our President and said, "Show him your tooth, dear."
GOOOOOOOOOO good luck on the weekend, gentlemen CITY

It’s not in the spirit of the game.

I attended another TDCA Board of Control meeting last night as City United’s representative as every club has a representative. Last night was the third occasion this season that a player had been cited to appear “for bringing the game into disrepute” because of comments that he placed on Facebook. All player and supporters are reminded to be very, very mindful of what is posted on social media. The Tamworth District Cricket Association has from the start of the season made it an inclusion of the "code of conduct" so any inappropriate, derogatory and harassment comments made towards another player, umpire or official relating to the Tamworth Competition will not be tolerated and will result in action being taken by the TDCA.

The TDCA is also stamping down on inappropriate language, verbal abuse or dissent directed towards an umpire or follow players during the matches. This behaviour is not in the spirit of the game and will not be tolerated. City United fully supports the stand taken by the TDCA on this matter.

As my dear mum always says if you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say it.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  where we play for the love of it CITY

What a wonderful performance from our terrific 3rd Graders.

Trent with his father Glen who was a long time City player also.
Our 3rd Grade team lived up to their tag as being “Terrific” by winning both their 20/20 matches on Saturday. It was a wonderful team performance in both matches, where the bowlers continually took wickets. Our 3rd Grade captain Trent Balderston was delighted by the team’s fielding in both matches during a very hot afternoon, he was also very impressed by his batsmen who were in total control chasing down the small totals in each match. .

The two wins have leapfrogged our 3rd Graders into 4th spot in the overall competition and 2nd spot in the One-Day competition giving them every opportunity to play in the One-Day final if they can beat Bective this weekend.

GOOOOOOOOOOOO exciting time for CITY

"The day was a win for us because we beat one of the top sides"

Peter Mead and his men had a wonderful afternoon after beating the One-Day leaders in Old Boys in the second 20/20 match. After falling short by 20 odd runs in the first match, our boys regrouped and played some very good quality cricket to beat Old Boys in the second match of the day.
Simon Toyer once again showed his class with a nice 44runs in the first match and then a delightful 51 runs in the second match.

Other batsmen to shine on the day were Ryan Hansen how scored 30 runs and Richard “I always look good” O’Halloran who put on a classy 44 runs of his own in the second match.

Simon Toyer has had his photo is most Monday editions of the Northern Daily Leader, the reason could be Simon is coming third in the NDL Best & Fairest Table with 11 points, two behind the leader. Well done Simon and may your outstanding form continue.
In the bowling department Dan Lawrence was the stand out, picking up three wickets in both matches. A great team performance from a side that always turns up ready to perform at their best.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO our 1st Grade side does our Club proud every week. CITY

The most important job in Australia.

They say Captaining your country in Cricket is the most important job in the country even in front of the office of Prime Minister. Micheal Clark and his side have won the Ashers 5-0 and won the One-Day series.
This will be a summer that people will speak about with enjoyment in many years to come.

A blonde woman ran into a police station wailing. She claimed that her house had been broken into.
After she stopped sobbing, the Police Officer requested her for a description of the robber.
"He was tall and dressed in white. He was wearing all sorts of protective pads, gloves and helmet."
"Hmmm...appears to be a cricketer," concluded the policeman.
"Ah officer!" she confirmed, "then he must have been an English cricketer."
"What makes you think that he was English? From the accent?" asked the officer.
"No sir," she replied, "he was in and out so quickly."

“We jumped into 4th spot by losing the match”

“We jumped into 4thspot by losing the match” was the greeting I received from Robby Gregg when I went to watch some of our 2nd Grade match on Saturday. Robby was referring to our Mighty Fourth Grade side’s final match before Christmas in which they had a narrow lost to Norths. City received one point for the match while Souths received no points at all after giving their opponents bonus points. Meaning our 4th Grade side has leapfrogged Souths into 4th spot on the ladder.

Son shows dad how it is done.In the same match Robby Gregg's son Brody showed his dad how it is done by taking three wickets in 2nds, it was an outstanding effort from a young player on his way up.

Both Robby and Brody will be looking for the recommencement of the 4th Grade competition on Saturday week, 4th February.

A Friday special.

Our three musketeers were attending a motivational seminar when they were asked to come up to the stage.

They were all asked, "When you are in your casket and friends and family are mourning upon you, what would you like to hear them say about you?

Richie was the first to say, "I would like to hear them say that I was the great doctor of my time, and a great family man."

Scotty was keen to say, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow."

Sugar was the last to reply with a cheeky grin, "I would like to hear them say...... LOOK!!! HE'S MOVING!!!!!"

GOOOOOOOOOOOOO all the best for tomorrow gentlemen CITY

Good news stories.

There has been so many good news stories this week of City United players and their achievements throughout the Northern Daily Leader. Today our own Jack McVey was blasted all over the back page with a nice story of him playing in the Two Day Test against Canterbury Colts in New Zealand.
City United’s Jack McVey will be a bowling spearhead when the NNSW Emus play for the Boomerang Trophy today.
Not to be out done, Dan Mitchell was caught on film in action bowling for City in our 1stGrade side last Saturday. Dan describes himself as feeling like “Robocop” during his bowling stint. Dan also talked about his tireless work he performs for Good Sports as the local project officer. City United has a level 3 in the Good Sports program where the club promotes healthy choices.
Under the program, clubs will focus more on young people, families and sport participation. The three-level accreditation criteria ensure clubs provide alcohol management standards and healthier choices for their members. City has moved through the levels over a period of 4 years, maintaining all standards from the previous levels as we progress.
GOOOOOOOOOOOO where is all about Good Sport CITYTHE Aussies have done it with the Ashes, and at Rangoria today the Northern NSW Emus begin their quest to regain the Boomerang Trophy.

At 1st Grade on the weekend.

It was wonderful to see three of City's all time war horses taking the field in 1st Grade for City on Saturday. Peter Mead (Captain courageous) put out a SOS for his good mates and City's long time players and supporters in both Dan Mitchell and Anthony Dutton.
Mateship on the field and the lifetime friendships you make along the way is the reason we play.
From the game Simon Toyer once again had a great all round match, scoring a nice 39 runs and also chipping in with the bowling taking 3 for 37.

The moments I cherish

Saturday will see us commence the second part of the season, seven matches remain before the semi-finals. Five One-Dayers and two 2 Day matches. There is so much cricket yet to be played and with so many competition points still up for grabs, anything is possible.
With the lost of seven 1st Graders from last season, this year was always one of rebuilding throughout the grades. Added to this the large injury toll the club has had and the large number of players being unavailable because of other committments. I am so proud of the captains and players from City United, I beleive that we have turned the corner with players now finding the feet in their higher grade and with them now feeling that they deserve their position within the team.
Starting this weekend lets continue to have fun and enjoy this wonderful game and play some good cricket. Bective East watch out City is on the way.
My most enjoyable time of the afternoon, sitting back, relaxing and chatting with my team mates at City while I’m waiting for my turn to bat. Love it.

It does not get any better than this!!!!

Michael Clarke’s Ashes heroes have completed a 5-0 series win.
Nathan Lyon led them in the team song, Under the Southern Cross I Stand , in the middle of the SCG soon after play, rather than simply in private in the dressing room as the players would usually sing it.
''Whenever he wants to sing it, we do as we're told,'' skipper Michael Clarke said. ''He wanted to do it in the middle of the wicket so we happily obliged.''
A lethal cocktail of fast bowling, positivity with the bat, playing with freedom and, most of all, a renewed sense of fun - concocted under the leadership of coach Darren Lehmann and Clarke - was behind the huge victory.
The difference between the two teams was enormous. The margins in the five matches were 381 runs, 218 runs, 150 runs, eight wickets and, finally, on Sunday, 281 runs. Alastair Cook and his men simply had no answer.
''I think we've played the brand of cricket that Australians expect and that we expect as a group. I think that's been pretty evident watching from the sideline,'' said Haddin, who after a brilliant individual campaign was pipped for the man of the series award by Mitchell Johnson.

Brad Haddin and man of the series Mitchell Johnson celebrate Australia's 5-0 clean sweep at the SCG yesterday.
While back at CITY our short Christmas break has come to a end. With training and selections on Wednesday for our first match back being a One -Dayer against Bective East this Saturday the 11th January. Fourth Grade are still on their summer holidays and will not return till February 1. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO just for the love of it CITY
