"CITY" was the call throughout the day.

City v's City.
The 1st Grade pre-season match against Armidale City  (our sister club) was a huge success. The weather was kind to us in Armidale and it was a delight to play on a turf wicket. It was hard to tell our two clubs apart with similar names and the same Gold and Maroon club colours.
The match proved to be a great hit out for all players involved. City batsmen amongst the runs were Dan Whale 26, Cory Callcott 23 and Mark Fisher 19. The President's Man of the match went to Mark Fisher. Mark struggled at the crease but valved his wicket and work extremely hard to accumulate his 19 runs. The bowling, saw Harrison Kelly pick up 4 wickets for 19 in a tight 8 overs and Tait Jordan bowled at the stumps and picked up 3 wickets, while Nick Blake was able to collect 2 wickets.
Both team ended the day at a pub where a refreshing soft drink was enjoyed.
A very big thank you must go to  Paul Lawrence for driving the bus and Phil for scoring on the day.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  we will see you City boys again next year CITY

A evening with Peter Pollock

Former South Africa fast bowler Peter Pollock will visit Tamworth on Saturday 5th October. Pollock is the brother of Graeme and father of Shaun and he will speak at a dinner to be held at the Calrossy Hall from 6:30pm.
John Gleeson will be speaking first, to be followed by Pollock. Clearly, from the title –“God’s Fast Bowler” – there is a Christian element to the event. Pollock is a Christian bloke and will relate his experiences as a cricketer within that message.  Cost is $30 for a two course meal.

City United’s trial match against Dubbo RSL Colts was well reported both in the Leader as well as a nice story on Prime News (Tuesday Night) with a number of City players being shown in action. Harrison Kelly spoke very well, a natural media personality.

More on the City and RSL Colts game.

A Group photo of the 1st Grade City United and Dubbo RSL Colts squads from Saturday’s match.

While over at the other match at Riverside 4.

Our President was Umpiring when he needed a toilet break, he call upon Paul Lawrence out to cover for him. Our President didn’t have a counter but was using a handful of pebbles to count the balls in the over. Paul just looks at the them and said “this isn’t an episode of The Flintstones is it?”

The star of the match was newcomer to City United, Dani who bowled beautifully in fact with one of his wickets he broke the bail. So in true 4th Grade style out came the Chewy Gum to hold the bail together.
All was forgotten about the bail that was held together with chewy gum. Until a delivery crashed into the stumps. We all went up with delight only to see the stump bent back but had the bail hanging onto the side of stump by the chewy gum. NOT OUT was the call, as either bail had not been dislodged.

Quote of the day was from Captain of the day Garry Whale, after a few overs from the opening bowlers Garry looked around and threw the ball to Trent and said “You better bowl, not much left” Trent and I both burst out laughing.
Man of the match went to Graeme Schwenke who made up the numbers for Dubbo and then cooked the BBQ for Lunch.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I true Club man, thanks Graeme. CITY

A big thanks to Dubbo RSL Colts

Great weather, great cricket, friendships made, what more can you ask for.
In a article By Geoff Newling in today's Northern Daily Leader under the heading             City United blows cobwebs away with new-look side
Jack McVey lets fly against Dubbo RSL Colts
CITY United began its new season with a new skipper and some new faces when it went close to running down Dubbo RSL Colts at Chauvel Oval in Tamworth on Saturday.
The visiting Dubbo side made 5-204 in its 40 overs and then bowled out City United for 200 in a tense season opener for both clubs.
City United began its run chase well, with former skipper Dan Whale (33) and Ryan Hansen (38) putting on an opening stand of 71. Simon Toyer (28), Nick Blake (28) and new skipper Harrison Kelly (26) also got starts but Will Wolter was the destroyer, claiming 4-34 from his nine overs.
Harrison thought it was a good start for him and his new club.
City United has lost a half dozen of last year’s side and will campaign with a new-look, young side under the leadership of the former State Under 17 and 19 player.
Harrison, 18, thought his side bowled steadily. “Everyone did their own bit – played pretty well,” he said.
He thought Tait Jordan bowled well as did fellow medium-pacer Nick Blake. “Tait played 2nd grade last year but might play a bit of first grade,” he said. Nick didn’t play at all last season. They’re two good young players. Lochlan Cooke bowled some good leggies as well.”
Jack McVey also bowled tightly, his first five overs producing just nine runs. He eventually finished with 1-24 off his nine.
Our batting was also pretty good,’ Harrison added.
“The top five all got starts.” Harrison is looking forward to the challenge of skippering the side.
"We’ve got another trial in Armidale next weekend and then the Bash For Cash here on the October long weekend".
In the other match played on Riverside 4 other wise known as the postage stamp due to it being so small Dubbo scored 276 runs from their 45 overs and in reply City scored 227 runs from their 45 overs. Everyone enjoyed themselves with lots of sixes and fours being scored and not much running needed which everyone was grateful for.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cricket was the winner on the day CITY

I googled Dubbo and found.

Dubbo is said to have come up with the following Australian nicknames, the local RSL club as the 'rissole'  and referring to the Commercial Hotel as the 'the mersh' .
The Macquarie River runs through the joint. It's 2001 population was 30,860, I guess it's bigger now. And lastly it has three highways running out of it Mitchell Highway, Newell Highway, Golden Highway well it did have back in 2001.
I could not find any information on Dubbo since 2001. I am guessing not much has happened since then.
But really Dubbo is a lovely place, it's nice to have you boys over.

Training is still on Sunday

City will be training on Sunday as usual even though we have a trail match this Saturday. Talking of training, my mind goes back a few years now, to a old City United player called Robby Smith. Robby was a true gentleman of the game and fun to be around. At one of City's afternoon training sessions Robby was batting when a delivery collected him in the place we all dread to be hit. We were all concerned as you are, when this kind of thing happens, through our laughing we said to Robby to check his box. Robby's reply was "I don't have a box".
Our response was "Why not"
With pride Robby replied "Cause I am not wearing any underwear"
GOOOOOOOOOO Robby spent two months in Highlands of Papua New Guinea working as a teacher at a local school. Robby was planing to return back to Australia by paddling through the Torres Strait in a dugout canoe until his mother heard of his planed trip and quickly had him on a air flight back home, but thats another story CITY

Voltaren are on board for another season.

On Sunday at training Ron told me that he has secured a bat sponsor, with Voltaren signing up for another season with City United Fourth Grade.
At training Ron Benjamin was also still over the noon with his beloved Sharks beating the Cowboys the night before. As Ronny said he can't see why the seventh tackle shouldn't be the norm.

Well done Ron, the Voltaren samples will be in great need.

They're back. OurThree Musketeers

Richie, Scotty and Sugar. These fellows make Saturday afternoons so much more enjoyable..
Our three guys were convicted of a very serious crime, and they're all sentenced to twenty years in solitary confinement. They're each allowed one thing to bring into the cell with them. Richie asks for a big stack of books. Scotty asks for his wife. While Sugar asks for two hundred cartons of cigarettes. At the end of the twenty years, they open up the Richie's cell. He comes out and says, "I studied so hard. I'm so bright now, I could be a lawyer. It was terrific." They open Scotty's cell door. He comes out with his wife, and they've got five new kids. He says. "It was the greatest thing of my life. My wife and I have never been so close. I have a beautiful new family. I love it."
They then open up Sugar's cell door, to see the two hundred cartons of cigarettes sitting the corner of his cell with Sugar slapping at his pockets, going "Has anyone, please anyone, has anyone got a match?"

With Father's Day just passing it reminds me of a story. A little boy and his father had a picnic in the park. When the son ran back and asked his dad for ten dollars to give to a little old lady in the park.
His father, impressed by his son’s kindness, gave him the ten dollars. “There you are my son,” said the father. “But, tell me, isn't the old lady able to work any more?
“No but she sells ice cream and chips” was the boy’s reply.
