They will be dancing in the streets as City wins TWO Minor Premierships.

All matches tomorrows have been cancelled due to the wet weather. As a result City United Third Grade and Fourth Grade teams are both 2012/13 Minor Premiers. I personally place more value on the Minor Premiership as is a reflexion of a team performance over the whole season. Congratulations on Peter Mead and his players, Timothy Skewes and Paul Lawrence as co-captains and their players, the selectors and all members of this great club CITY UNITED.
Both 3rd Grade and 4th Grade teams will be playing in the Major Semi-finals and don't forget our Second Grade side, they play in the Minor Semi-final next week as well.
Now Don't forget. There will a celebration BBQ Saturday back at the bowling club at a earlier time of 4 pm, to mark the end of the regular season.
GOOOOOOOOOOOO"you bloody beauty" CITY

When Old Blokes Play for City.

When Old Blokes Play for City.
Once we’d pound in from the fence
to bowl in Lillee-style,
or bat for hours, resolved, intense,
all dancing feet and guile,
we now curl offies down the track
and keep our innings brief,
to ease that tender, aching back,
and give our legs relief.

These days our knobbly knees are shot,
our eyesight’s none too good;
we find that we can’t do a lot
of things that we once could.
The girls who came to watch us play
are now our wives, who sigh
and, knowing of the price we’ll pay,
keep liniment close by.

Yet still we keep on turning out,
for cricket is much more
than just a game, it’s not about
that final winning score.
It’s bonds we’ve forged along the way,
It’s the friendships, not the fame,
the mates we’ve gained as the seasons fade away…

when old blokes play for City.

GOOOOOOOO it is more than a game CITY

It's Duckie weather again.

With all this wet weather around again this weekend, City will keep everyone informed of the latest news from the TDCA in relation to matches this Saturday.                                                                      Now Don't forget. Come rain or shine. Win ,lose or draw. Washout or play. There will a celebration BBQ Saturday back at the bowling club at 6 pm, to mark the end of the regular season.

My daughter recently got engaged, so excited about hearing the news my mother-in law rang me to find out more about him.
"What wonderful news, tell me all about him, is your daughter's fiancee a good catch?"
"Good catch?" I answered with much pride . "I say he is, he's the best fielder we've got in the side!"
GOOOOOOOOOOOO it's all about having soft hands CITY

One left to play.

Our MIGHTY 1st Grade side has it's final match this weekend against Old Boys. I am so proud of them, the way they played within the spirit of the game, the way they stuck together throughout the season, the way Dan Whale our Captain handled himself both on and off the field. There has been three highlights for me this season, which will stay with me forever. One of them was this one, it's worth remembering again. The "Big boys did us proud".

CITY United players chaired young batsman Michael Bellamy off No.1 Oval on Saturday night after he smashed the winning runs in a nail-biter against Old Boys in the Tamworth first grade.
The rest of the City players were on the edge of their seats in the pavilion as Bellamy and number 11 Aaron Dennis chalked off each run, but went berserk when Bellamy belted a boundary to win the game by a single wicket.
After rain on Friday night, the match started late and became a day-nighter but the wicket was still a sticky one and it provided a low-scoring but exciting contest.
Old Boys batted first and despite the top order making starts the innings honours went to the City bowlers. Dennis was the pick of them with 3- 15 from eight overs but Simon Toyer also made the most of the opportunity with 4-10 at the end. The other highlight of the innings was a brilliant catch by Toyer off Dennis at backward point to remove the dangerous Aaron Hazlewood.
“Jack McVey bowled well at the start and Aaron Dennis bowled a good spell in the middle and nipped a fewout,” City skipper Dan Whale said. “Then Simon Toyer came on for a few and got the tail out.”
Chasing a small total, City could smell a third win for the season. After a shaky start to their inning, Daniel Lawrence decided the best approach against the tricky movement off the pitch was to go after the bowling and he hit 31 off 28 balls before coming unstuck when Norvill brought himself into the attack. The wickets continued to fall but the runs required were also reduced and when Bellamy joined Richie O’Halloran, the pair put on a careful but crucial 18 for the seventh wicket. Norvill struck twice in two balls to leave City 8-73 and this time it was captain Whale who added 18 with Bellamy for the ninth wicket before he departed with the score on 95.
That brought Dennis to the crease but the number 11 defended well and allowed Bellamy to score the runs. The right-hander got the score to within two runs of victory and then struck a lofted off drive to the fence to secure the win and take his own score to 31 not out from 62 balls. “Good batting from our lower order got us home in the end,” Whale said. “There were a couple of good partnerships and Dan Lawrence came in the middle and got us out of a hole. “Then Michael Bellamy batted really well. “It was what you needed to do, be patient and work hard. “You couldn’t go at the ball hard. “Both sides bowled well. “We knew it was going to be a low scoring game after the rain we had but going into it we just wanted to bat time and bat our overs out."

GOOOOOOOOOOOO well done City CITY

The toughest job there is. To face the new ball as an Opener.

My tribute to Sean and all the other City openers
You get the word “We are batting”.
Unpack the kit.
Left pad, right pad, adjust  the straps.
Collar up, sunscreen on.
Check the beloved  bat.
Collect the gloves .
Sit apart, isolate the thoughts,  ignore the taunts.
Time to go, glance at the bat.
Helmet  on, as you prepare for battle.
Check the grip, on the weapon of choice.
Cradle the bat, as you become as one.
Stride to the wicket, take guard on middle and leg.
Take a big deep breath, try to stay relaxed.
Check the field,  where is the gap.
caress the ball,  off  the mark.
Bless the bat!
Face again, adjust  the box
 Sweet  cover  drive……………….boundary.
Wipe the face of the bat as if you were wiping away the blood.
Short pitched, fast, take it on the body.
Next ball faster looking for your middle stump, kept it out, just.
The battle is warming up.
Out of the corner of your eye you see the Umpire signals two to go.
Next one flys outside off, you shoulder arms.
Final ball, jumps from a good length, catches your glove, flys so slowly and drops in a gap.
You survived, the first over gone, you give a sigh of relief.
GOOOOOOOOOOOO to face the new ball, when the bowlers want blood, you have to be a little bit mad CITY

The Baggy Green

Once I even dared to dream
I’d one day wear the Baggy Green.
As Dad gave me my first small bat
I wish it came with the bottle green hat.

I dreamt I wore it sitting high
and plundered runs as the years went by.
As other interests came and went
the dream of the Baggy Green never went.

But now alas, I have a son
and the Baggy Green was never won.
When he was younger he'd dream
long and hard as I once did, for the Baggy Green.

I now watch him play for his City side
And as he strides to the crease
I sit and close my eyes
and think of those men who’ve
worn the Baggy Green.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO just for the love of it CITY

It will standing room only at No1 Oval come Sunday Night.

This Sunday will see a City 4th Grade squad play under lights at No1 Oval against the Tamworth Veterans team (the team has some both NSW and Australian Repersentatives) for the Annual "Don't call me old, I just move a bit slower than I use to" Shield. If you are after some entertainment on Sunday, you are welcome to come down and watch, it should be a gigantic and enthralling match. Match starts at 4pm and will need to be finished before 10 o'clock as it will pass most of our bed times.  The Tamworth team currently holds the shield and I know that the City boys are up for a big one.

This Sunday, Ron will be swaping his Sunday's best for his whites.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO we play just for the love of it CITY

The weekend that was.

CITY BOYS PLAYING THEIR PART ON THE REPERSENTATIVE STAGE.
Jake McVey took 4 for 27 runs and Ben Chew scored 11 runs, were both part of the winning  War Veterans Cup Final played on Sunday against Gunnedah.
And don't forget Ben Semmilar was "Man of the Match" in the MA Connolly Cup win on Sunday. He scored 24 with the bat and then back that up with 2 for 46 from his 10 overs.

In the Grade matches it was all happening.

Ist Grade fought bravely to the end. 1st Grade has its final match for the season, it’s Grand Final against Old Boys this coming weekend.

In 2nd Grade the team once again was in the match till the final wicket. Tezza Kampe showed his all-round ability with a 5 wicket haul.

Congratulations 3rd Grade for being the Minor Premiers. It could have been called a few matches ago but after Saturdays win it is official. The player with the biggest smile back at the Bowling Club after the match was Rodney Pryor who took the match winning and Minor Premiership catch.

4th Grade walked away with its first Outright points of the season. A big match for City, lies ahead as it fights for the Minor Premiership for this Grade on Saturday.  What about that “No-ball”?, even that could not stop us from our victory.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Training tomorrow from 5pm, see you there CITY

We are without an umpire.

This Saturday the little boys in 4th Grade will have no Umpire for the match. So goes back to the days of backyard cricket were you do your own Umpiring. Now, when you consider the friendly sledging that happens amongst the team I can already see some of the following being said.

“What happens when a player loses his eyesight?
He becomes an umpire"

Paul Lawrence bowls. Batsman is trapped plumb LBW. Paul appeals.
“Not out.”
Next ball. Paul ever-so-slightly irritated.  Paul bowls.  Audible snick, ball deflects and sails upward, caught behind.  Paul appeals.
"Not out.”
Third ball. Paul a little more irritated now. Paul bowls. Through the gate, stumps spread-eagled, middle stump uprooted and cartwheeling. Paul turns to the umpire (who is one of his teammates)  and says with a wry smile, 'We nearly had him that time, didn't we?

GOOOOOOOOO you are assured of a laugh on Saturday's at 4th Grade, I expect there to be more than normal. CITY

Victory song for City

As Peter Mead and his boys were walking off the field after winning the 2012/13 One –Day Final. Josh Bennie asked if City had a victory song. Well not yet, may be we could take the lead from the Australian Test team.
The song "Under the Southern Cross'' is sung by the players of the Australian cricket team after each victory.
"Under the Southern Cross I stand
A sprig of wattle in my hand
A native of my native land
Australia, you little beauty"
It is treated with reverence and respect by the players. At any one time there is a custodian of the song, whose honoured role it is to sing it and lead the others in singing it after a victory. As the keeper of the unofficial anthem retires, he anoints another to be the custodian.
The custodians so far have been:
Rod Marsh, passed it to Allan Border on retirement;
Border passed to David Boon when he took on the captaincy.
Boon passed the honour to Ian Healy when he retired.
Healy anointed Ricky Ponting when Healy retired.
Ponting gave the responsibility to Justin Langer when he became captain in 2004.
Langer appointed Michael Hussey in 2007 on his retirement.
Hussey has now passed it on to Nathan Lyon upon his retirement in January 2013.
GOOOOOOOOO I have heard a slightly different vision to the last line CITY

Valentine’s Day at City

Box of chocolate $20, dinner for two $180, dozen roses $30, being single this year on Valentine's Day and saving $230, PRICELESS!

After she woke up, a woman told her husband, "I just dreamed you gave me a diamond necklace for Valentine’s Day. What do you think it means?"
"You’ll know tonight," he said.
That evening the husband came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it--to find a book entitled “The Meaning of Dreams.”
GOOOOOOOO if you give a little love , it will all come back to you CITY

Two things that come to mind from Saturday's matches

Firstly we all see things slightly differently and umpires are no different.
My family was discussing a doubtful run-out decision. The argument went backwards and forwards, but eventually mother spoke up and said: "Well, from where I was sitting-at the far end of the sofa, by the sideboard, with a clear view of the screen, I thought he was out!'

The second involves our President who opened the batting, to every one's surprise. After only lasting a few deliveries he was out, caught behind.
The question was then asked “What is our President's favourite movie? A. Gone in 60 seconds.”
GOOOOOOO the sledging in 4th Grade from your own team mates, can be so cruel at times CITY

Perpetual trophies

With the season quickly coming to an end we ask that all perpetual trophies are returned to either your captain or bring them along to training. Talking of training, this is the part of the season when everyone is excited about the matches that lie ahead. Let’s keep the numbers at training high and really put in. We all want to be at our best through this time of the season and at training is where it all starts.
GOOOOOOOOOO train hard, play hard CITY

The 4th Grade "DUCKY" was there on Saturday supporting his team.  He told me this story of one of his cousins.
This duck walks into a bar, and asks the bartender, “Do you have any grapes"?
The bartender says, "No we only sell beer here". The duck leaves.
The next day the duck walks back into the bar and asks the bartender, "Do you have any grapes"?
The bartender says, "No I told you we only sell beer, and if you ask me again I’m going to nail your beak to the bar.” So the duck leaves.
The next day the duck walks back into the bar, and asks the bartender “Do you have any nails"? Confused, the bartender says "no."
The duck is silent for a moment, and then asks, "Good! Got any grapes?"
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  City is in good hands CITY

What makes City United who we are? The players and our supporters.

I have a joke for you two young fellows.

Why does blonde dogs have lumps on their head?
From chasing parked cars!

Cooky said to Tom I heard a joke yesterday
A Little girl said: "Why does your son say, 'Cluck, cluck, cluck?'"
the mother said: "Because he thinks he's a chicken."
Little girl: "Why don't you tell him he's not a chicken?"
Mother: "Because we need the eggs."

Tom didn't get it.

Mark Fisher told the boys this joke.
There was a little boy and a little girl in a bathtub having a bath. Suddenly the little girl looked down at the boy.
"Can I touch it?"
"No way -- you already broke yours off!"

If you look closely both ladies are trying so hard not to laugh.

GOOOOOOOOOOO Scotty's joke was to rude to print, so I will tell you later CITY

Watch out Newcastle they are on their way.

A number of City players are either now living in Newcastle or are headed down that way shortly to further their education.  Jack McVey, Ben Chew,
Michael Bellamy, Timothy Skewes to name a few. They will be travelling back when they can to play for City throughout the rest of the season.
It takes me back, to when I visited Newcastle
Driving down Hunter Street
In my hot FJ Holden
With chrome-plated grease nipples
and double reverse twin cam door handles
Sitting eight abreast in the front seat
And we would lean out the window
And say real cool things to the sheilas on the footpath
Like uhhh.... 'G'day'
GOOOOOOOOOO Don't you ever let a chance go by O Lord. Don't you ever let a chance go by CITY
